Field Trip!

On Wednesday morning, both the first- and second-year classes of the Executive Program revisited the classic childhood experience of a field trip, but this trip required no parental consent forms or bus roll calls.  We gathered at University Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center (http://www.universityhealthsystem.com/university-hospital/), where we spent over two hours learning about and touring University Hospital's recently completed (and gorgeous!) Sky Tower.  Our gracious hosts included Tim Brierty, CEO of University Hospital, and Karen Bryant, Vice President of Hospital Administration-Operations, who were extremely generous with their time, helpful in their responses to our many questions, and understandably proud of their new facility.  

A beautiful morning in a beautiful building was a great way to kick off the final day of the on-campus session for the fall of 2014.  After wrapping up their courses on Wednesday, students headed their respective ways, where they return to their full-time jobs while continuing their graduate coursework at home, online, and through teleconference sessions.  Best wishes for a great semester, executive students, and we'll see you after the New Year!

ACHE Congress? We've Bean There!

This past week, Trinity HCAD students had the chance to enjoy the annual tradition of attending the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Congress in Chicago. This fun ritual allows first-year students to bond with their classmates, meet and learn from ACHE's community of executives, connect with Trinity alumni, prepare for Preceptor's Conference with mock interviews and experience the city of Chicago. All 23 of the first-year on campus students attended the event along with the Trinity HCAD faculty and a number of the second-year students, who are currently in their year-long residency. There were over 100 education and networking sessions so students were busy meeting with healthcare professionals and graduate students from across the country. Annual Women's Forum

First year students: Rebecca, Christina, Emily, Anna and Caroline We would like to extend our gratitude to AnneMarie Witecki, Megan Powe and Patra Katsigiannis for inviting the first-year students to the Women’s Forum on Thursday, October 30 th .  We were fortunate to listen to Keynote Speaker, Christann Vasquez, President of Seton Medical Center and a prominent figure in the health care industry.  Following our discussion with Ms. Vasquez, the students formed small discussion groups to speak about the challenges that females have in executive and leadership positions. The session ended with the opportunity for students to ask questions to a panel of successful Trinity Alumni including Xochy Hurtado, Tina Ortega, and Leah Spann-Lacy.  Many of the questions focused on work-life balance, raising children while in the work force, and the general challenges that women face in the business world.  Overall, this was a very informative and engaging session. I became interested in healthcare at a relatively early age. I was raised in southeast Michigan and it became clear to me that the socioeconomic status of our community coupled with the state’s educational inequality had a detrimental effect on the overall health status of individuals within the community.
