Looking Spiffy

With the fall semester now underway, our new first-year students in the on-campus program (Class of 2016) have wrapped up most of their orientation activities and have 3 classes under their belts!  This morning everyone gathered together outside of Chapman Center for their class picture, and everyone was all smiles, despite the heat and humidity.  Don't they look great? Afterwards students headed to Chapman 100, where they took care of some more orientation details and then were dismissed for the holiday weekend (although several were spotted already busy at work on homework assignments).  Enjoy the Labor Day weekend!

They're Here!

Today we welcomed the Class of 2016 of the on-campus graduate program in health care administration to Trinity University!  The day began with introductions and lunch at the Holt Conference Center, followed by students' first presentation assignment.  Breaking into groups of 3 or 4, students worked together to provide entertaining presentations on a variety of topics such as activities and attractions in San Antonio, interesting facts about Trinity University, profiles of faculty members, or why students are drawn to a career in health care administration.  Given the fact that most students had known their classmates for less than 24 hours, these first presentations required a healthy dose of courage, humor, humility, and creativity.  Thankfully, not only did all of our students survive their first assignment, they all did a great job, with presentations ranging from skits to songs to quizzes to quick photo tours of San Antonio.  As these presentations were a competition, comple

Tomorrow, August 26th, 2014, we'll welcome a new class of on-campus graduate students to the Department of Health Care Administration at Trinity University, and we'll also welcome back the Class of 2015 from their summer break.  Today, however, it's calm and quiet in the Department, as faculty and staff are busy at their desks getting ready for an exciting fall semester.  We're looking forward to a busy and bustling Department beginning tomorrow, and we've got a nice spot on the wall ready for a picture of the new Class of 2016! Even though things are quiet here on campus, our extraordinary alumni continue to make some noise out in the field.  Three Trinity alums - Wayne Smith (#15), Joel Allison (#35), and Douglas Hawthorne (#96) - once again made Modern Healthcare's list of the "100 Most Influential People in Healthcare" ( http://www.modernhealthcare.com/section/100-Most-Influential-2014 ).  We're proud to call these top leaders alumni of

Field Trip!

On Wednesday morning, both the first- and second-year classes of the Executive Program revisited the classic childhood experience of a field trip, but this trip required no parental consent forms or bus roll calls.  We gathered at University Hospital in the South Texas Medical Center ( http://www.universityhealthsystem.com/university-hospital/ ), where we spent over two hours learning about and touring University Hospital's recently completed (and gorgeous!) Sky Tower.  Our gracious hosts included Tim Brierty, CEO of University Hospital, and Karen Bryant, Vice President of Hospital Administration-Operations, who were extremely generous with their time, helpful in their responses to our many questions, and understandably proud of their new facility.   A beautiful morning in a beautiful building was a great way to kick off the final day of the on-campus session for the fall of 2014.  After wrapping up their courses on Wednesday, students headed their respective ways, where the

Pecha Kucha Pros

We were thrilled to welcome our executive program students to campus this week, who completed three very full days of coursework to kick off the fall semester.  Of course, the intense on-campus sessions are now just part of the routine for the Class of 2015, who in their fourth semester will now be tackling the subjects of Health Care Human Resources Management and Health Care Finance.  In addition to welcoming back this great group of students, we also were excited to meet the Class of 2016, which looks to be a fantastic group with a wide range of experiences and perspectives.  These students were quickly oriented to the program and to Trinity University on Monday before diving into coursework in Health Services Organization and Policy as well as Quantitative Methods. On Tuesday afternoon, students in Health Services Organization and Policy were challenged to put together Pecha Kucha presentations, which are presentations taking less than 7 minutes consisting of 20 image-based

Introducing the TU HCAD Herald!

Welcome to the Trinity University HCAD Herald, a blog that provides accounts of experiences in the Trinity University Health Care Administration Department (HCAD) from a variety of perspectives.  Contributors include first-year and second-year students in our on-campus graduate program, students in our executive program who simultaneously juggle graduate studies with full-time work experiences in health care organizations, and administrative residents completing their year-long residencies prior to graduation and embarking upon a career in health care administration, as well as faculty, staff, and alumni of our nationally recognized graduate program in health care administration.  Through the contributions of these varied voices, we hope to provide a glimpse into what the life of a health care administration student looks like, and we also look forward to capturing the latest news about our program to share with all who take interest in health care administration and the great things
