Alumni Weekend 2018

October is notorious in south Texas for bringing rain but it also brings in some sunshine
in the form of the annual Trinity HCAD Alumni Weekend! This time is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the Trinity HCAD family and reconnect across the alumni network. Trinity Alumni Coordinator Elizabeth Ford worked with HCAD Alumni Association President Heidi Pandya to host a series of events across the two days. There was a great turnout as graduates reconnected and met with the students.

The first of these events was a Thursday night dinner at Pearl Studio
to recognize our 2018 Duce Award recipient Sally Deitch and Momentum Award
recipients Holly and Peyton Elliot. Mrs.Deitch warmly accepted her award with a speech
thanking her parents and husband. The Elliots gave a shared speech on the value that Trinity
had added to their lives and what the award meant to them. Additionally at the dinner we thanked
Dr. Mary Stefl for her time spent teaching at Trinity wished her the best with her retirement.
On Friday, the award winners spoke on a panel about how to make the most of residences
and the importance of working hard. They also emphasized the need to have work-life balance or,
as Peyton Elliot said “work-life integration”. All three of the panelists encourages students to have
lives outside of work and to reach out if they ever had any questions.

Following the panel, there was a lunch mixer between HCAD Alumni Association's Board of Directors and the first-year on-campus HCAD students. The alumni spoke about their career paths and gave students advice on creating their own path in healthcare. The students were excited to hear from the alumni, especially on non-traditional healthcare jobs such as consulting or working in a startup.

As always Alumni Weekend was a great chance to reconnect with friends, to be thankful for the
Trinity HCAD family and to make new memories. We look forward to seeing everyone again in
October 2019!

First year students: Rebecca, Christina, Emily, Anna and Caroline We would like to extend our gratitude to AnneMarie Witecki, Megan Powe and Patra Katsigiannis for inviting the first-year students to the Women’s Forum on Thursday, October 30 th .  We were fortunate to listen to Keynote Speaker, Christann Vasquez, President of Seton Medical Center and a prominent figure in the health care industry.  Following our discussion with Ms. Vasquez, the students formed small discussion groups to speak about the challenges that females have in executive and leadership positions. The session ended with the opportunity for students to ask questions to a panel of successful Trinity Alumni including Xochy Hurtado, Tina Ortega, and Leah Spann-Lacy.  Many of the questions focused on work-life balance, raising children while in the work force, and the general challenges that women face in the business world.  Overall, this was a very informative and engaging session. ACHE Congress? We've Bean There!

This past week, Trinity HCAD students had the chance to enjoy the annual tradition of attending the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Congress in Chicago. This fun ritual allows first-year students to bond with their classmates, meet and learn from ACHE's community of executives, connect with Trinity alumni, prepare for Preceptor's Conference with mock interviews and experience the city of Chicago. All 23 of the first-year on campus students attended the event along with the Trinity HCAD faculty and a number of the second-year students, who are currently in their year-long residency. There were over 100 education and networking sessions so students were busy meeting with healthcare professionals and graduate students from across the country. For this week's Student Spotlight we're interviewing Ashraf Ali, a member of the Class of 2021. We're so lucky to have him in the program and look forward to learning more about him! Undergraduate University: Auburn University   Undergrad Major: Health Services Administration What made you interested in healthcare administration? I became interested in healthcare at a relatively early age. I was raised in southeast Michigan and it became clear to me that the socioeconomic status of our community coupled with the state’s educational inequality had a detrimental effect on the overall health status of individuals within the community. Our community was also very ethnically diverse, and I believe that cultural boundaries imposed further challenges for individuals to receive the care they needed.
