Para Mi

One of the many reasons why we are proud of our students in our graduate programs is the continued commitment they exhibit to serving and engaging in the community, breaking out of the "Trinity bubble" and developing habits of community service and engagement that define effective health care leaders.  A recent example of such engagement occurred this past weekend, when several first-year students from the on-campus graduate program participated in a local race hosted by CentroMed.  Camille Fagan, a current first-year student, contributed this account of the event for our blog:

CentroMed, a non-profit community health center with over 20 locations across San Antonio, hosted a 5K/10K run fundraiser on September 24th.  The run was themed “Para Mi” and focused on keeping San Antonians active for their health, their families, and themselves.  Our first-year class visited a CentroMed site early in the semester, and when they learned of the event, three students signed up!  Dylan Darden, Pancho Escobedo, and Justin Volkman participated in the run, citing community involvement, population health, and class bonding as reasons for joining.  As icing on the cake, Pancho won second place overall, and Justin and Dylan won third and fourth place, respectively, in their age groups!

At the race, the students got to spend time one-on-one with Dr. Ernesto Gómez, the President and CEO of CentroMed. Dr. Gomez thanked them for their commitment to health and reminded them of the importance of staying connected to the community through events like the Para Mi run. Our students will certainly remember these wise words as they move forward toward their administrative residencies and beyond.
